GET 2 KNOW: STICKY DUB

Artist name:

Sticky Dub

Location:

Liverpool, UK

How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as an interpretation of the plants that I use and consume, which currently are — thyme, frankincense, rosemary, ganja, ayahuasca. These plants are really carving out my sound, at the moment.

Could you tell us a bit about when + how you got started:

In taking music more ‘wholesomely’… it started in 2015? I was coming up to my fifth year of studying contemporary dance and ballet… expressing myself through my body and kind of made an expansion into sound, and I’ve just… never looked back. I very much got into music through dance.

First music / artist that inspired you?

First music that inspired me ever, was probably Kano, the song ‘P’s & Q’s’… As well as…ah no, I’ve got an even earlier memory — Mr Vegas ‘Heads High’. I remember driving with my aunty on the motorway and we played that tune back-to-back about twenty times… that moment never left me.

What are some tracks from the past year that find yourself returning to?

…From the past year? I would say…

…I’m just scrolling through my Spotify…she’s in my likes…

…it’s my tune I always go back to as well, it’s the most honest answer…

Oh yeah! Ojerime, representing London, a song called ‘In the Know’ off the album called Bad Influence. Big tune. I always go back to it.

The one tune you’ve got on repeat right now is…?

A tune called ‘Heavy Duty’ by Herman Chin Loy on the Aquarius Dub album. Big Tune.

One piece of advice you’d give to budding DJs / creatives:

I would say… face there darkness that you’re going through in your life… face your traumas within your childhood.

Find the meaning in it.

In all of that, is the power of the creation. Understand the meaning and significance of your own pain… That’s what a great artist really is, it’s not like, how many likes you get on your post or like, what events you DJ at and get streamed at. Do you know what I’m saying?

Any new projects that you’re working on that we can look forward on later this year?

Yes! I mean, I’ve finished it now — but I’ve been working on an EP that's going to be coming out on Eglo Records in a month’s time… looking forward to that. I feel like I’ve really expressed myself on that and I feel like, I’ve made something unique.

Lastly, where can we catch you performing live?

You can catch me next week in Liverpool doing a live show with a live band, performing my music. Also, catch me… I’m hoping I’ll be at We Out Here festival, again, this year... I always end up being on it last minute — so hopefully you can catch me at that. Inshallah.

Peace.
